Today there is much talk about SELF. The topic may be on posing for the perfect selfie, creating the image you prefer to communicate to others on social media or receiving the love and respect desired from others in relationships to help self-esteem. No matter where the topic is coming from it is important to know where it begins.
In Genesis we find the account of the beginning. The BEGINNING of EVERYTHING. This also includes one of the fundamental issues people have about self clearly explained. Let’s read Genesis 1:26-27; 31 (KJV):
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
In this passage, we find the key to unlocking so many of the mental and emotional struggles that we have. We learn we are made out of God’s image (both male and female). We also see that what God made was good (vs. 31). In these truths we find freedom that we are ultimately image bearers of God.
So what does it mean to be made in the image of God? Also, how does knowing this help to start to unlock our freedom from so many emotional and mental challenges?
Be thinking about this and come back next week and we will dive into those important questions!
