Genesis 4: Multiplied and Heard
How could he do that?
What was she thinking?
I could never have imagined it would have led to that!
How often have you said or heard the above phrases?
In Genesis 4 the “domino effect” of sin multiplied quickly. The moment sin entered into the world it grew (from eating forbidden fruit, to murder, to bigamy). One moment there was peace and serenity in the garden and the next there was heartbreak and loss of life. We see the continued tendency to pull away from what God had ordained and choose another path. As that new path is chosen, we then start to see clearly the lack of peace and joy there is on a path that is not blessed by God. We not only hurt others but others start to hurt us. One thing is clear; God sees and/or hears it all.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. Gen. 4: 8-10 KJV
Cain was angry that his offering was not respected and instead of making the wrong right be let that anger fester until it grew to murder. One aspect that takes place soon after we have sinned or have been hurt by someone else is that we respond. We respond with acceptance, complaining, repentance, lamenting and/or by vengeance.
We learn in Romans 12:19 that we are not to avenge ourselves or let wrath build but we are to know that vengeance is God’s and God will repay. God heard blood crying out from the ground. God knew exactly what happened and God punished Cain for what he did (Gen. 4:11-16).
When we pull away from the path God has ordained it is important that we get back to the path God created as quickly as possible. If we do not, we will soon see the “domino effect” of sin start to take place. One barrier that keeps us from getting back to the path God has ordained is our hurt and unbelief that God sees/hears every offense and that we can trust the character of God to make things right again.
Know that there is no thing that is hidden from God.
Know that the One that first ordained the path can get you back to that path.
Know that you can trust the character of God to always be faithful and true!
Sin multiplies quickly but God’s grace and power are so much more (Rom. 5:20)!
