Genesis 6:  Obedience – Lifetime Commitment

In Genesis 6 we learn more about the task set before Noah. He was to be a central figure in showing God’s grace by providing a way to be saved from the pending destruction of mankind. One only needed to believe and accept the gift of the way out of this death (the gift of the ark). We also learn that 120 years were given to Noah to build the ark and during which time those around would have the chance to turn toward God and believe. Noah went on that ark with his family and no one else. A very sad reality of the state of the hearts and minds of those around him in not accepting the gift of life that God was providing. In The Chronological Life Application Study Bible (Tyndole, 2007) an interesting point was made that Noah’s length of obedience is longer than the life expectancy in this present age. In other words, Noah demonstrated a life of faithfulness and obedience longer than our entire lifetimes today. No wonder, Noah is highlighted in what is known as the “faith hall of fame” found in Hebrews 11..

By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house… Hebrews 11:7 KJV

Just in this day, God has provided a way to life through the gift of the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The ark is a symbol of what Jesus does for those that accept and enter into the relationship with Jesus.

Staying faithful to something that is important to you, something you believe in, even when it is not producing instantaneous results of pleasure and happiness is very hard. We struggle with staying faithful to diets, exercise, work projects, and relationships overall. Let Noah remind us of the importance to the act of obedience, a lifetime commitment, to what God has called each of us to do. Let us not be so paralyzed by the troubles and or the happiness we may be experiencing today that we walk away from the overall vision, plan and purpose God has set on each of our lives. It is important to remember that God loves us so much and his plan will always lead in a better direction than our own.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11(KJV)
